The Shady Garden Club started, quite literally, in our own back garden.
After building our own tiny house, we found ourselves with a patch of land, a lot of optimism, and some fairly ambitious ideas about permaculture, growing our own food, and living a little more off-grid.
If we could plant it, we probably did.
We planted too early, planted too late, lost arguments with caterpillars, rabbits and the weather, and quickly discovered that growing your own food is equal parts rewarding, frustrating and ridiculous.
Luckily, the wonky carrots, suspicious tomatoes and other questionable harvests always gave us something to laugh about.
We’ve also always loved a good old-fashioned murder mystery, and gardening turns out to have more in common with one than you might expect. We spend half our time creating life and the other half acting as reluctant merchants of death — weeds uprooted, slugs removed, pests dealt with, and an alarming number of sharp tools stored in the shed.
It seemed only fitting that things became a little shady.
That combination of gardening mishaps, dark humor and a little mystery became The Shady Garden Club.
A place for people who love gardening, even when gardening doesn’t always love them back.
We’d love to have you along for the journey — and to share a few garden follies along the way.
